Melbourne Fencing Centre
Everyone at Melbourne Fencing Centre shares a passion and love for fencing.
This is how we started
Olympian Ernie Simon had a vision: to put Australian fencing on the world map. His lifelong aim has been to raise Australian fencing to international standards, winning credibility and respect on the international fencing scene. Ernie established Melbourne Fencing Centre (MFC) in Richmond with entrepreneur Patrick Lepicier in 1998. Ten years later, in 2008, the centre found a new home in the vibrant and supportive City of Boroondara.
We have already shaped history
Our passion and love for fencing has already shaped history.
Ernie coached Seamus Robinson to become Australia’s first and only Junior Épée World Champion in 1991. From 1999 to 2005, he also coached Vicky Wilks, who went on to become Australia’s first and only Veteran Épée World Champion in 2010.
We continue to shape Australia’s fencing future
At MFC, we recognise that quality coaching is essential to our athletes’ success.
We invest significant energy in developing our own coaching staff, who benefit from training under our internationally trained senior coaches. With over 127 years of combined experience, our coaching veterans implement a highly successful system to pass on their mastery to the next generation of fencing coaches.
Australia’s greatest fencer
Four-time Olympian Greg Benko’s brilliant career as an athlete, together with his determination to succeed, make him an exceptional leader at the international level. Having competed at the 1972, 1976, 1980, and 1984 Olympic Games, he now devotes his fencing genius to serving our members as a mentor and high-performance manager.
A place where people connect
Our goal at MFC is to develop children, youths, and adults into strong fencers committed to fairness, respect, and cooperation. On our fencing journey, we attain self-control, athleticism and suppleness. We live life with purpose as we learn the art of fencing, creating memories and long lasting friendships. The people we meet on the way come to define our passage. Together, we feel the thrill of the sport and share the excitement on the strip.
Together, we overcome adversity—and celebrate success!
We come together at the highest level to teach excellence in fencing and inspire you to become the best you can be.
